About Bench Fi

Tom Scanlan
Primary Developer & Founder of Bench Fi
I'm a developer who loves making cool stuff. I thought financial benchmarking was an underserved space, so I built Bench Fi to bring transparency to personal finance by allowing people to benchmark their financial situation against peers and receive personalized recommendations.
The Mission
Bench Fi aims to help people understand their finances with relativity by providing users with powerful benchmarking tools that compare their financial situation to peers with similar backgrounds and circumstances. Our AI-powered recommendations help users create realistic financial coaching tailored to their unique situation.
The Technology
Built with modern web technologies and statistical analysis, Bench Fi uses data mining techniques on anonymized financial data from BLS and Census data from the US government to provide accurate benchmarks and personalized recommendations. We prioritize privacy and security, ensuring your financial data remains protected.
Development Journey
The idea for Bench Fi came from my own experience trying to understand if I was on track financially. Traditional financial coaching tools focus on budgeting and tracking, but few help you understand how you compare to others in similar situations.
I actually had this idea as far back as 2020 and built a version of the app under a different name, but it didn't go anywhere. After a couple more years of working on different projects, I was laid off at a startup I was at and decided to get back into some of my side projects.
Today, Bench Fi continues to evolve with new features and improvements based on user feedback. Our goal is to make financial coaching accessible, transparent, and effective for everyone.
